The Los Angeles Times reports that after seventy years, the California state Assembly has adopted a resolution expressing profound regret for the persecution of Chinese immigrants, who in the 1880s and 1890s performed the dangerous work of building railroads and early California infrastructure. The resolution provides an acknowledgement and apology to the thousands of Chinese who faced decades of discrimination, marriage restrictions and private injustices. While the bill does not seek financial compensation for those who were mistreated or denied basic civil liberties, the bill’s authors intend to ask Congress to adopt the same resolution.
